The 7th annual Zwickelmania took place this year on Valentine’s Day, February 14th. The statewide beer event was organized by the Oregon Brewer’s Guild, and attendance is estimated at around 40,000 people with increasing numbers every year!
Zwickelman gets its name from the zwickel, a sample valve that is mounted on the outside of fermentation tank that allows brewers to take samples for quality assurance and control. 110 breweries all over Oregon opened their doors and offered tours and tastings to the public, often featuring special one-off beers.
I was able to tour Buckman Botanical Brewery located in South East Portland, home to the Green Dragon Pub & the Green Dragon Homebrew club. This nano brewery is popular for their botanical infused beers, meads, and ciders. At the end of the tour we were able to try to of their Cherry Cyser and Double Fruitcake Stout. Both with very rich and interesting flavors, I personally enjoyed their cherry cyser more as it had nice sweetness to it.
To help combat drinking and driving during an event that takes place all over the state, a number of the local beer tour shuttles, including Brewvana, also offered free rides between locations during the day.
