So as many of you may know there are hundreds of beautiful trails along the Columbia River Gorge. Adam and I have done a few hikes around there, but about a week ago I stumbled upon a photo on Instagram of what looked like a similar trail of The Narrows in Zion, but here in Oregon. So of course, the only hashtag on it was #ColumbiaGorge. I knew that it had to be a specific trail because of the similarities with The Narrows. I did some research and found out that the lovely trail I wanted to hike was called the Oneonta Gorge and it leads to a beautiful waterfall and swimming hole.
The trail is easy to get to and it’s only a 0.6 mile hike to the waterfall. You do need to prepare yourself to get wet. Adam and I brought our water shoes and clothing that dries fast, although a lot of people wear bathing suits. Most of the time the water is just right above your ankles, but there are two parts where the water reached below my thighs, and one time was right above my belly button. I saw some people climbing on the rocks to avoid the deeper waters, but I wouldn’t recommend doing that. Not only because the whole point is to enjoy this watery trail, but also because the rocks are wet and you could slip and injury yourself.
Of course you should be careful bringing your electronics with you as they can get wet. This time I only brought my cellphone, so I did not get a lot of photos, but next time I will bring the Go-Pro and try to capture the whole hike on video.
Tips for this hike:
- Wear comfortable clothes that dries fast
- Wear water shoes
- Do not wear sandals
- Bring a backpack to put your electronics and extra things. (you can carry it above your head in the deeper areas)
- Do not bring small dogs.
